North Charlotte Homes For Sale
Old North Charlotte, located in Charlotte, North Carolina, may seem contrary to its name as it actually encompasses a large section of the city's east side.
Dating back to the early 1880s, Old North Charlotte is among Charlotte's oldest neighborhoods, rooted in the era when Mecklenburg's economy heavily relied on the textile industry. The area is adorned with former mill buildings and is home to Charlotte's arts district, North Davidson, also known as "NoDa."
After World War II, Old North Charlotte resembled the typical mill towns found throughout the piedmont region, with workers residing in similar-looking company-owned homes on what was then the northern fringe of Charlotte, from which the area derives its name.
By 1975, Old North Charlotte was home to Johnston Mill, the city's last surviving textile mill, which soon ceased operations. Subsequently, the area experienced widespread poverty and crime, notably prostitution. However, in the 1990s, a community-led effort, spearheaded by figures such as church leaders, successfully revitalized the area, making it more appealing for development due to its proximity to Uptown Charlotte.
